Replace any burnt-out bulbs following the instructions in your owner's manual. Replace wiper blades If in good condition, windshield and rear window wipers help to keep the road visible in any weather – but they should be replaced twice a year, according to Miller, generally in the spring and fall. To test the health of your blades, hit the washer spray button to check if the operation is smooth and streak-free. If not, head to your dealership or local parts retailer to pick up replacement blades. Removal and installation is fairly painless – just follow the instructions provided with the blades. Change engine oil Regular changes are crucial because oil viscosity (thickness) breaks down over time, and the viscosity is what's responsible for lubricating all the moving parts in an engine. An oil change might sound daunting, but it's easier than most people think. What's important to consider is the long list of equipment you'll need, ranging from new oil and an oil filter to a jack and jack stands, as well as a level, covered area in which to work. If you don't have access to everything you need or have never changed your oil before, you might want to leave this job to the pros, who can perform the task quickly and inexpensively. What's important is for you to know when it's time for new oil, and most cars can help you with that. "Most vehicles nowadays will tell the owner when it's due for an oil change through the dashboard's maintenance minder," says Miller. "For vehicles that are older, most require a change every 6,000 to 8,000 km. Check the owner's manual to see what the manufacturer recommends." While not everyone will feel comfortable getting under the hood, understanding some of the basic workings of a vehicle will help you make good decisions when it comes to the health of your car. n For repairs and maintenance that require a professional, turn to the experts at BCAA's Auto Service Centres, now open in Kelowna and Penticton.
