It inspires and encourages us to get fur- ther in touch with ourselves, especially when we travel on our own. Travelling solo can allow for deep contemplation and a sense of wonder that differs from what we encounter when we're part of a group. But it can definitely be a challenge to get everything planned without some travel buddies for motivation. If you're thinking about travelling solo on your next trip, you may have noticed the term single supplement during your research. A single supplement is a charge paid by a solo traveller to compensate a hotel or cruise ship for losses incurred because only one person is using a room or cabin. Most hotel rooms and ship cabins are built with the assumption that at least two people will occupy them. In fact, nearly all hotel and cruise pricing is based on double occupancy. Fortunately, as solo travel becomes more common, tour operators and cruise lines are offering reduced or waived single supplement rates. A CAA Travel consultant can help plan a solo trip that is perfect for you. For cur- rent trips and offers, visit caask.ca/travel/ solo-traveller. Kathryn Lockhart is a 15-year experienced CAA Saskatchewan Travel consultant (27-year veteran in the travel industry). She has travelled to England, France, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, the Netherlands, Costa Rica, Mexico, Cuba, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Arizona, California, New York, Hawaii and Jamaica. Lockhart, along with several other travel consultants from New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Ireland, was awarded Insight Vacations Top Achiever's Trip to Turkey in November 2014. They were led by tour guide Cem Tas and enjoyed many highlights, such as: • Istanbul: A visit to Topkapı Palace, a museum featuring a world-renowned collection of jewellery and porcelain; the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world; and an evening boat tour of the Bosphorus Strait. • City of Bursa: A tour of the silk market and great domed Green Mosque – named for its blue-green interior tiles. • Ankora: A stop at the Hittite Museum, its exhibits of gold, silver, glass, marble and bronze dating back to the first millennium B.C. The group also explored underground cit- ies built without modern tools and electricity; watched a knot demonstration at a carpet workshop; and visited a ceramics shop that makes wine bottles and paints traditional designs dot-by-dot. The Turkish experience ended with a final group dinner featuring entertainment by the Whirling Dervishes. CAA Travel consultants have first-hand experience to help you plan your vacation.
