24 HOURS 12 G O I N G P L A C E S | W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 istock, il cane rosso, ponderosa templeton/wikipedia (clarion alley) THERE IS NO SHORTAGE of iconic landmarks in the City by the Bay, and on your first visit it's worth battling the crowds to experience a few of the famous tourist haunts (Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, Alcatraz Island). If you've been there, done that and have the "I ❤ SF" T-shirt to prove it, it's time to take in San Francisco more like the locals do. San Francisco Hitting all the hot spots – from tried and true to cool and new by Meghan Jessiman CAA members get exclusive savings on an already great deal with the San Francisco CityPASS. Pick it up from a CAA Manitoba service centre before you go. Clarion Alley. NOW THAT YOU'VE worked up an appetite, pop inside the Ferry Building and get your first taste of this city's farm-to-table dining scene at the simple, but seriously delicious, Il Cane Rosso (canerossosf.com). The menu changes weekly, but you'll never go wrong with any of their breakfast sandwiches or homemade yogurt. Be sure to stop by Blue Bottle Coffee (www.bluebottlecoffee.com) for one of their killer cold brews on your way out. BEING ONE OF THE world's most technologically savvy cities, it's no surprise one of San Francisco's coolest tours is conducted via an app. Download the community-curated 1AM Mobile (www.1amsf.com) free street art guide – don't miss Clarion Alley, a kaleidoscope of murals run by a local artists' collective. NO OTHER CITY DELIVERS Happy Hour as happily as SF. Sure, you could easily spend the hours between 3 and 6 p.m. hopping from bar to bar in North Beach or Little Italy. But on a sunny day you cannot beat the steeply discounted wine selection and buck-a-shuck oysters at Waterbar (www.waterbarsf.com), with its lively patio scene and picturesque waterside view of the Bay Bridge. THEN MAKE YOUR WAY TO the Mission District, where dining and nightlife options abound. St. Vincent's (www.stvincentsf.com) wine list (skilfully curated by owner David Lynch) packs just as much punch as the southern comfort food coming out of the kitchen. If pasta's what you're craving, it doesn't get any fresher or more authentic this side of Napoli than at Flour + Water (www. flourandwater.com). Can't narrow down the menu? Order the five- course pasta tasting. Those with a penchant for mixology will do well to end the night at Trick Dog (www.trickdogbar.com), an under- the-radar watering hole serving creative cocktails based on shifting themes. Drawing libation inspiration from such wide-ranging sources as the colour wheel and astrological signs, you never quite know what you're in for here. GP CONSIDERING THE CITY'S exceptional culinary offerings, do yourself a favour and first take a pre-breakfast jog along the Embarcadero. Not only will you experience this palm-tree-lined boardwalk before the masses ascend, but, if you plan it right, you will arrive at the thrice-weekly (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays) Ferry Plaza Farmers Market (www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com) just as it opens for business. While the Mamas & the Papas suggested wearing flowers in your hair while visiting San Francisco, you'll likely be more tempted to pick up a fresh bunch of posies at a bargain price along with locally grown produce for snacks during your stay and artisanal products, such as Frog Hollow Farm's preserves, to take home as tasty souvenirs. Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. 1AM Mobile's street art guide app. Farm-to-table fare at Il Cane Rosso.
