Kelowna
Calling
Okanagan College
student Blake Edwards
explained that
UBC did
not actually take over
Okanagan College as
described in "Kelowna's
Second Wind" (August
2015). In 2005, Okanagan
University College (
OUC)
split into
UBC Okanagan
and Okanagan College.
OUC's northern campus
became
UBC; the other
Okanagan campuses were
renamed Okanagan College.
Still, judging from all the
chirpy tweets, readers were
overwhelmingly pleased with
the story by Jamie Maw.
The mayor of Kelowna,
Colin Basran, retweeted
this photo of himself on the
lead page. Camille Jensen (@
CamilleJnsn) wrote: "Born
and raised in #Kelowna, it's
rewarding to see the city
evolve. @bcbusiness cap-
tures this reinvention well."
Andrew Greer (@Greer_
Andrew) added, "Wondering
what's going on in #Kelowna
Starting to shake the 'newly
weds and nearly dead'
image," and Chris Cochrane
(@pedalingscience) said:
"@bcbusiness article on
#Kelowna hits many points
that make me love it here–tho
more work to be done on
jobs/transit/bike routes."
Sharing
Thoughts
In "Divide and Conquer"
(August 2015), Frances Bula
looked at the sharing econ-
omy, prompting some unex-
pected comments, e.g., one
of the best reasons to restrict
taxis is to prevent the streets
from being clogged with
vehicles looking for a fare.
Another respondent called
that ridiculous, pointing out
that in the Uber world, cars
not wanted by passengers
stay o› the roads: "The pres-
ent situation is far worse than
letting the market decide."
Mark Fedyshen (@MarkFed
Recruits) tweeted, "This is a
very interesting (& long) read
on #Uber & #Airbnb. Why
Vancouver has been slow to
adopt the sharing economy."
Bernice Paul (@BernicePaul)
replied, "Slow? Excuse me @
fabulavancouver, #Vancou-
ver? has been anything but
slow in advancing #shar-
ingeconomy." Sharn Kandola
(@Gursharn), stepping back
from that debate, noted "the
sharing economy isn't auto-
matically going to make the
world a better place."
