S
ilence falls over the Canadian Western
Agribition crowd as legendary horse
trainer Cain Quam calmly persuades a
wild three-year-old gelding to submit.
The horse whisperer from Kendal, Sas-
katchewan, then puts a saddle on the sweating
animal, places his foot in the stirrup, throws
his leg over the horse's hindquarters, lowers all
of his weight onto the gelding's back and pro-
ceeds to do the unexpected. He rides an
unbroken horse after just one hour of training.
e crowd erupts in jubilation and disbelief.
Quam then does the unthinkable. He trots
the horse over to the mounted shooters who
are waiting to perform next. He takes one of
their explosive guns and shoots it off the
young horse's back. e crowd goes wild.
Welcome to Regina's Evraz Place during
Agribition week, where the unexpected occurs
daily during Canada's largest agricultural and
livestock show. With the 45th edition set for
November 23-28, 2015, organizers have put a
special emphasis on including exciting con-
tests such as full-contact jousting, live horse
breaking and cowboy mounted shooting in
the schedule of 60 events across six days.
"Our job is to bring events that people
wouldn't see every day," says Agribition CEO
Marty Seymour, adding that while the event is
a gathering for the agricultural sector, it's also
about sharing western culture with the world.
