Search exterior window frames, doors and siding for cracks and gaps where water could get in. Some will be easy to fill or fix yourself but could save you from a lot of damage. Also check pipe joints for leaks that could cause rot and damage and repair any cracks around electrical outlets and alarm system lines. • Check your alarms. Fall is a good time to test your fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and install fresh batteries. Inspect portable fire extinguishers too. • Get on deck. Pick up leaves and patio or yard debris to prevent slipping later in the season. Wash balconies and decks with hot soapy water or use a mild anti-mildew cleanser. Clean, dry and store away outdoor pillows, hammocks and chair covers. • service your heat source. Be sure to have a professional check and clean your chimney if using wood heat, and change your oil heater's filters and service gas furnaces regularly. A technician can check for both efficiency and hazards. • Create a storm kit. A storm kit is a handy source of essential items in the event of losing power. Consider what you and your family might need. Be sure to include a flashlight with new batteries, candles, matches, a portable radio, water and snacks. (For more info on creating a kit, visit publicsafety.gc.ca) Keep your kit somewhere easy to access. • add a layer. Older homes may be losing heat through single panes of glass. If upgrading to double-paned windows isn't an option, try heat-sealed plastic film to add an extra layer to your windowpanes. Also consider purchasing storm windows that are attached in fall and winter for extra protection. • blanket your home. Almost any home can benefit from added insulation. Foam pipe insulation can be easy to install and could help prevent energy loss and potential water damage from frozen pipes. Also disconnect garden hoses and shut off the indoor valves that control water flow to the outside. • review your roof. Rain and snow are on the way. Have a professional replace any loose shingles and check the flashing around chimneys, vents, etc. Clean debris from gutters and drains and ensure that downspouts are in working order and point away from your house. And beware of ice dams. As snow melts on your roof, ice dams can form that block water from draining. Consult a pro on ways to keep your roof cool, like sealing air leaks or insulating the attic. n Before winter sets in, you can save on fuel bills, feel more comfortable and keep your home in good repair by following some simple steps to prepare for the coming season. Attending to minor problems yourself or booking professional services now will save you time and aggravation later when poor weather makes it less convenient to tackle home maintenance jobs. at home prep talk Tidying up around the house this fall?
