56 | august 2015 Lamborghini Calgary has a ground and polished concrete floor. A number of sealants and epoxies were used for the different areas to provide separation and give the building a differ- ent look depending on its use. "It's always a challenge with a new building to give it texture so having a contractor that can see that and can give that to you really helped the interior," says Marshall. In fact every detail has been care- fully thought out, even down to the energy efficient LED lighting that casts a 65-degree beam onto the cars and cre- ates a subtle reflection of the car onto the polished concrete floors below. "The owner, Asgar Virji, did a really good job with the interior and made the choice to go with low voltage lighting and LED. For car sales it's so important for the spectrum of light to highlight certain aspects of the vehicle," says Harp Hoonjan, owner's representative at Platinum Projects. As with any project, Lamborghini Calgary had its challenges. One of the biggest being the project's timeline and September 2014 start. What essen- tially would normally be a spring start and a 10-month project had to be com- pleted in only eight months. To meet this Chandos decided to use the Lean construction method to get the owner in on time. "It is counter-intuitive to our industry, however, had we followed a traditional construction schedule the owner would have ended up 10 months later with a beautiful building that was completely inaccessible; it would have been surrounded by a gigantic piece of dirt where you couldn't get the cars in and out," says Dees. Instead the trades were all asked for their optimum schedules given no constraints or impediments by other work happening onsite. By giving each contractor full exclusive access to the site, the underground utilities, site ser- vices, foundations, asphalt surface and all the site work were completed in less than 60 days. "Then we spent the winter putting up the building on an essentially completed site and only had some small seasonal work to do in the spring, which was done around the owner's business hours." says Dees. "This project was out- side in." Lean also helped in the delivery of the materials. Using just-in-time delivery methods ensured only materials being installed on that day arrived on site. The service lift that takes cars from the service bays all the way up to the second floor also posed a challenge. "We used American Custom Lifts out of the U.S. We basically had to build a whole shaft around a three page document of a lift that no-one had ever seen before," says Dees. "We had to bring in 30-foot posts through a single garage door and stand them in place within this eleva- tor shaft. We tried and failed a couple of times, but in the end we used equipment in tandem and a bit of old fashioned mus- cle to wrestle these things into place." Head outside and IBI Group has cre- ated landscaping that is simple, rustic and elegant. Box style hedges, gravel and shrubs have been hand-picked for a Calgary climate but that mimic an Italian landscape. In conclusion, Dees says, "The overall shape, angle and design of the building is something I will never build again in my life. There are not a lot of buildings of this kind of design that would suit the kind of client working in Calgary. But for Lamborghini it is a complement to the design. A unique car and a unique build- ing to suit."
