Wood finish metal cladding system from Vicwest Building Products. august 2015 | 41 Metal Roofing/Cladding Today's high-end paints and finishes enable metal cladding systems to mimic other materials. Natural finishes like wood, metal and stone continue to be sought after but their high cost and the availability of much less expensive metal facsimi- les are prompting designers and others to opt for products like the Expressence line from Vicwest Building Products. "It uses advanced PVDF paint technology to achieve stunningly realistic imagery," says Peter MacNab, market development manager for Canada at Vicwest. The company has also introduced an anti-graffiti coating. "It's available on vir- tually any Vicwest roofing or cladding profile and won't compromise the colour or integrity of your structure. Post-vandalism tags are easily power-washed away," says MacNab. Sobotec Ltd. has introduced a new modular, rainscreen panel system called SurFlex, which is available in zinc, aluminum and stainless steel. "It looks like Alucobond, but everything is made from sheet metal," says company president Vlad Slobot, who adds that Alucobond is less suited for small panel sizes. "The key is that SurFlex is not a composite. It is a real solid metal sheet, including metal joinery. This product has a good interlocking system for quick installation," he says. For a truly wide range of colours and finishes, including brushed and mirror, Royal Decor Steel Inc. has recently added the Glomesh Mosaic line to its product selection. "Although this is mostly used indoors, it can be made for exteriors as well. We have the ability to make any design. You come with the pattern and we can do it in stainless steel," says Mehrnoush Ershadifar, operations manager at Royal Decor Steel. Architectural wall panels are another high-end product that can accommodate arcs, curves and more elaborate geo- metric shapes – in short, a vast range of design concepts. They have sometimes been associated with higher costs and mistakes. Collaboration and an inte- grated product delivery approach, sup- ported by design software, can make a difference, however. This helped Firestone Building Products reduce costs on the new Physical Activity and Wellness (PAW) Centre at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. "We were able to offer a system that reduced the cost from the original design. Using Revit allowed us to model the building ahead of time and share it with other stakeholders," says Bob Nixon, regional manager for Firestone metal products.
