Building project utilizing Robertson Building Systems Mesa panels; ACM panel system AL13 from Anenda Systems Inc. august 2015 | 39 Metal Roofing/Cladding Thermal performance and code compliance was the focus of a recent thermal modelling study by Morrison Hershfield. "The objective was to come up with ways of meeting the Model National Energy Code. The study shows the industry options for meeting higher thermal performance requirements," says Steve Fox, general manager at the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute (CSSBI). Thermal performance has a lot to do with the growing popularity of IMPs. "They are quickly gaining market share both for their thermal value and ease of installation. They are one of the quickest and easiest ways to comply with the newest energy codes. Options for insulation and daylighting provide opportuni- ties to save heating, cooling and energy dollars," says Gail Read, marketing manager at Robertson Building Systems. The company's Mesa panel consists of two single-skin metal panels in 22, 24 or 26 gauge steel with a foam core available in various thicknesses to achieve the desired thermal value. At the higher end, a new aluminum composite material (ACM) looks set to save money and attract attention. The ACM panel system, called AL13 from Anenda Systems Inc., differs from others in that it is a tab-over system that does not require pre-fabrication. "It's similar to Alucobond, but differs in the way it is installed. When a building is spec'd with one of the three main ACMs, the fabricator builds out the panel at a shop. With our system, there is no off-site fabrication. The panels are cut to fit on-site. The system's fasteners are extrusions," says Keith Borg, operations manager for the AL13 system at Anenda. If a standard colour and finish is ordered, the lead-time for getting product is no more than that for delivery, provided it is in stock. With a dealer network in place, orders should role in. "The overall cost, including installation is about 40 per cent less that of other ACMs," Borg says.
