Spring 2015 > youthink pS > 7 youthink.ca research initiatives include Ocean Networks Canada, the Institute for Integrated Energy Solutions and participation in the ATLAS Can- ada international particle physics experiment. In addition, its co-operative education program is one of the largest in Canada with almost 3,000 placements yearly. One in four students participate in a co-op, which are available in about 50 academic areas, offering income and relevant work experience, while helping build invaluable networks of contacts. University of Alberta On the other side of the Rockies, the Uni- versity of Alberta is consistently listed as one of the top 100 universities in the world. Melissa Padfield, the U of A's deputy registrar, says her campus has developed to the point where 13 per cent of its 39,000 students come from outside Canada. "We're a destination not only because of the high quality of our pro- grams, but because our campus is traditional in its insularity yet is located right in the city: students get the best of both worlds." Padfield adds that the University of Alberta embodies her province's spirit of en- trepreneurship and innovation, and she points to Entrepreneurship@UAlberta as an example. "This is an Alberta School of Business/Tech- nology Commercialization Centre initiative to catalyze a broader and more vibrant eco- system of entrepreneurship and innovation at our campus," she says. "Our program is dedi- cated to identifying student entrepreneurs from all the faculties and offering them space and opportunity for expression of their talent, networking and mentorship." You may have guessed by now that most universities strive for common standards of excellence and yet boast about their indi- viduality — and as such, it would be difficult to choose one that fails to deliver the goods. "About the only thing you shouldn't do is choose a university solely because you want to get a career and make a lot of money," concludes UBC's Andrew Arida. "University is about self-discovery and determining how best to fit into the world. Better yourself as much as you can, and good things will come." • Kwantlen Polytechnic University With campus locations in Cloverdale, Langley, Richmond, and Surrey, Kwantlen Poly– technic University is never far away.
