CULTURE ON DISPLAY
It's easy to lose yourself for an hour or even
a day in any of Vancouver's world-class art
galleries and museums. The Vancouver
Art Gallery has nearly 8,000 pieces in its
permanent collection, including the largest
collection of work by acclaimed British
Columbia artist Emily Carr, and attracts
travelling exhibitions of world renown. Sports
fans head to the BC Sports Hall of Fame
and Museum at BC Place Stadium to
get to know the province's top athletes and
relive Vancouver's glory during the 2010
Olympic Winter Games. Meanwhile, history
buffs love the Burnaby Village Museum,
where they can step back in time and
stroll down a village street in 1920s British
Columbia – complete with townsfolk in
period costume. Crime buffs can learn about
the seedier side of the city at the Vancouver
Police Museum, from infamous murders
and unsolved cases to the city's old morgue
complete with autopsy oddities.
Artful expressions
Vancouver is home to
some 350 outdoor art
installations. Head to
English Bay for a can't-
miss photo op with
A-maze-ing Laughter
by Chinese artist
Yue Minjun – the 14
cartoonish and larger-
than-life bronze figures
grinning from ear to
ear are a favourite
among locals. Nearby,
you'll find the inukshuk
constructed by Alvin
Kanak, an Inuit stone
structure that became
the symbol of the
Vancouver 2010
Olympic Winter Games.
And don't miss the
seemingly pixellated
Digital Orca by
renowned local artist
Douglas Coupland
near the Vancouver
Convention Centre.

Scientifically
proven fun
Head for the newly renovated
geodesic dome overlooking False
Creek for a day of educational
entertainment. Science World
at TELUS World of Science
is a knowledge-focused
wonderland that encourages
visitors to dirty their hands and
expand their minds by exploring
hundreds of interactive exhibits
(where else is it considered
"learning" when you play a
piano with your feet or build
cities with wooden blocks?). The
whole family will enjoy taking
part in the fun and informative
science shows, strolling through
lush Ken Spencer Science Park
and checking out the fascinating
documentaries at the OMNIMAX
Theatre – the largest of its kind
in the world.
