84 | A PR IL 2015 Learning Resource Commons – Humber College to establish the courtyard space as a learning hub for the Humber College Campus. The courtyard was developed as a quadrant within the campus that provides a balance of soft and hard sur- faces employing deciduous shade trees, a lawn, understory planting, seating and decorative paved surfaces." The landscape spaces of the LRC will accommodate high use by stu- dents in an inspiring and contempo- rary campus setting. Jana Joyce, senior landscape archi- tect and associate with MBTW Group, was part of the planning and compliance team on the project. "We were providing input on these exterior spaces and how everything is connected. It was big picture think- ing, providing input on the design and visioning with Humber, and then sitting through the presentations and ensuring compliance, before anything was actu- ally implemented," says Joyce. Phase one, known as the "Early Work s" was completed in August 2012. Other components that had to be addressed were a reconfiguring of the parking lot and other services, before the project broke ground in October 2013. The transit loop was added as the LRC construction wrapped. Phase three, retrofitting of vacated space, is expected to continue throughout 2015- 2016. As schools and departments move into their new space, vacated spaces will be transformed into labs, classrooms and offices. Some might say it has been a long and protracted process. However Anderson says the college could not have asked for a better project team to partner with as the project unfolded. Notwithstanding grey hair counts from any project team members, the feeling, it seems, is mutual. "We have a great relationship with the college, and we had a good time working with this owner," says Gibson from PCL. One of the key objective of the project was to focus on creating learning and social environments for the students outside of the classroom environment, and the team succeeded in doing this. "The students spend much of their time in between classes and it's important for them to feel like they are part of a larger community," explains Daniel Ling, princi- pal at Montgomery Sisam Architects Inc. "I believe this project represents a signif- icant step in the transformation of this campus from a place that you simply go to attend classes, to a campus community." Anderson adds, "This project signals a new era to the north campus, and is the first of what I feel will be a very vibrant addition to the Humber College legacy."
