"We incorporated large, outdoor courtyards for the residents that are secure," says landscape architect Daryl Tyacke, principal, eta landscape architec- ture. "The smaller, north garden is sensory with fragrant plants and herbs. The south garden has a walking loop path and a shel- tered smoking area, a lawn for children and flowers for multi-seasonal interests." Tyacke says each of the gardens has a small, raised wheelchair accessible table for therapeutic gardening. "This area is all about sensory activities. The residents wheel up to the table and get their hands in the soil, feel the plants, the dirt and experience the smell. It's kind of a primal exercise that keeps them grounded and in touch with nature," explains Tyacke. Both north and south courtyards are secured with appropri- ate height fencing to prevent wandering. Near the entrance to the complex, stacked boulders replicate a Viking burial mound, harkening back to the Danish history of the facility. "It is situated in what will be a wildflower meadow. It should be quite moving when everything is in bloom," says Tyacke. "This has been a great partnership with Fraser Health, CPA Development, NSDA Architects, Aliki Gladwin, Daryl Tyacke, the entire consultant team and VanMar Constructors," says Douglas- Matthews. "VanMar's Bob Fawdry is the best superintendent that I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and we are also grateful to the people at VanCity Savings who were instrumental in assisting us with the financial compo- nent of the project." A
