(both pages) lea currie S P R I N G 2 0 1 5 | G O I N G P L A C E S 27 What to Do Hike the Grey Owl Trail – It's an easy but long trek; give yourself four to five hours. Grey Owl's cabin is a great backdrop for a picnic (see main story). Canoe Clear Lake – Rent a canoe, Grey Owl's preferred mode of transportation, and paddle around this gorgeous piece of Manitoba. Canoe rental: $20 per hour. Tee off at Clear Lake Golf Course – Men constructing the golf course at the time often found Grey Owl sleeping on the greens after a visit to town. Browse books at Poor Michael's Emporium – You can't buy bootleg liquor here anymore, the way Grey Owl did, but you can browse used books (including Grey Owl's own), plus global crafts and local art. Unwind with fair-trade coffee and a Grey Owl Energy Ball from the onsite café. Pop by the Visitor Centre – Watch Grey Owl's Beaver Family movie, shot in RMNP, as well as other his- toric films. Life-size dioramas showcase the park's resident ani- mals. You can also pick up maps, buy a fishing licence and check trail conditions. Where to Eat WigWam Restaurant – Wasagam- ing's log cabin restaurant is a designated Provincial Heritage Site and was one of Grey Owl's favourite spots for a hot meal. Be sure to try the signature WigWam soup. White House Bakery – Although not around during Grey Owl's time, the cinnamon buns – commonly known as the best in Manitoba – must be mentioned. Choose from plain, whole wheat with raisins, cream cheese and pecan with cherries. Foxtail Café – The wood-fired pizza oven, along with some incredible chefs, create tasty pies with local flavour. (Located out- side the park in Onanole; a second location is opening May 2015 in downtown Wasagaming.) Where to Relax Slumber in an oTENTik – Sleep like Grey Owl, surrounded by nature, in these tent-cabin hybrids – an A-frame cabin with canvas roof. Best of all, it's camping with- out the muss and fuss. Unwind at Elkhorn Resort – With a first-class spa and restaurant, this resort on the edge of a boreal forest allows you to indulge while still communing with nature. –L.C. In Grey Owl's Footsteps More than 80 years later, visitors to Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP) can still experience the area as Grey Owl did during his time as Canada's first conservationist – plus a few modern trappings. WigWam soup. An oTENTik tent-cabin.
