interruption from other hospital activi- ties); tour video-conference rooms; a library, study areas and offices. Also part of the HOpe Centre is the new BCAS station, which will replace the current station at St. Andrews Avenue and 13th Street. The new station has nine ambulance bays and four sleeping rooms. Because BCAS is a provincial service, it is not constrained by municipal boundaries, which means its paramedics can respond to medical emergencies anywhere in the region. WSP Canada Inc. is the electrical consultant on the project. The main challenges it faced was to meet the project budget and, at the same time, to meet the requirements of CSA-Z32- 09, which regulates the application of electricity in health care, because proj- ect owner Vancouver Coastal Health wanted the building to be an acute healthcare facility. Glotman•Simpson is the structural engineer and faced two main challenges on the project. The first was facilitat- ing construction in an active hospital campus and keeping access roads open during construction, while installing services and tunnels to link the new building to the existing network. The second challenge it overcame was thermally isolating the extensive concrete facade from slabs in the build- ing interior, for reasons of comfort and energy performance. Because the facade is exposed to the outside, it gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter. If it is in direct contact with the interior slabs, it heats up or cools down the interior. Breaking this contact intercepts the flow of heat and cold, and the result is better ther- mal building performance, less energy use, and better and more consistent interior comfort. The project is slated to open in fall 2014. n LOCATION East 13th Street and St. Andrews Avenue, North Vancouver, B.C. OWNER/DEVELOPER Vancouver Coastal Health ARCHITECT IBI Group Inc.
