highlights the open grain and brings out the natural character of each plank. Bostik, Inc., a leading manufacturer of hardwood adhesives in the U.S., has introduced Ultra-Set SingleStep2 utilizing Bostik's A xios Tri-Linking polymer technology – the latest break- through from one of the largest manu- facturers of adhesives and sealants in the world. "Ultra-Set SingleStep2 is the ultimate in high-performance wood looring adhesives," says Marie Joannette, director of operations. "It combines high-st reng t h adhesive, indust r y-leading moist ure barrier and sound abatement underlayment technologies all in one dynamic, space- age formulation." Ultra-Set SingleStep2 also contains Bostik's patent-pending Thickness Con- trol Spacer Technology, a proprietary feature ensuring the ideal membrane thickness between the substrate and hardwood looring is maintained. "Not only does Ultra-Set SingleStep2 offer unlimited moisture vapour protection, it provides sound abatement properties equivalent to one-quarter-inch cork underlayment," says Eric Kurtz, Bostik market manager. Kurtz adds Axios technology is a revolutionary, breakthrough science that offers exceptional value to owners, architects and designers, general con- tractors, distributors and loor cover- ing installers. "Projects are completed faster with less risk, higher durability and lower overall project cost," he says. Maxxon Corporation, a leading pro- vider of loor underlayments and loor- sound deadening systems, says the failure of inished loor goods due to moisture vapour emissions has become a hot topic in the industry. To meet the needs of the construction industry, Maxxon Corporation has introduced two surface-applied moisture vapour barriers: Maxxon DPM (Damp Proof Membrane) and Maxxon MVP (Moisture Vapor Protection). These surface-applied moist ure vapour bar r iers reduce moist ure vapour emission of up to 25 pounds to three pounds or less and provide a high alkalinity barrier (pH 13 to 14), prevent- ing the delamination of adhesives, loor coverings and coatings. Maxxon DPM also prevents capillary iniltration of oil or other chemicals from the ground and can be used to treat oil-contami- nated slabs. Maxxon DPM and Maxxon MVP are ideal for old buildings with- out a vapour barrier or new buildings, covering even ive-day-old concrete. Mapei Inc. continues to offer bonding products that meet the high standards of the looring industry, including hard- woods. "Preparing substrates used for hardwood looring installations today focuses greatly on making sure the looring is lat so when the planks are laid, there are no bumps, waves or ridges," says Jeff Johnson, business marketing manager. "If the surface is not completely lat, the end result could be depressions in the loor created by hollow spots where the glue doesn't marry up with the wood creating a canyon. It makes sense to take extra effort getting the loor prepped so the inal look is perfect," adds Johnson. One recent project that incorporated Mapei products on installation is the 66-storey Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto. "Mapei began work on this project early in the planning stages," says Johnson. "The original speciication called for the use of a double-glue- down with cork to be used for sound reduc t ion and t hen an adhesive. Mapei offered a system warrant y using Novoplan 2 to meet the sub- strate tolerances for engineered wood and Ultrabond ECO 995 as a one-step acoustical membrane and adhesive." Mapei was able to meet the needs of the contractors and the property owner for the installation of 400,000 square feet of wood. Before the wood could be installed, however, extensive surface preparation had to be com- pleted. Working with the contracting crew, Primer L was applied and 400,000 square feet of Novoplan 2 was poured to meet the speciied tolerances for substrate latness. ■ Lauzon Distinctive Hardwood Flooring's Organik Series.
