The Pacific Salmon Foundation was established in 1987 as an independent, non- governmental, charitable organization to protect, conserve and restore wild Paci c salmon populations in British Columbia and the Yukon. Today, the Foundation galvanizes the breadth of vested stakeholders to support Paci c salmon from stream to estuary to ocean. The Foundation: • Raises money and makes grants to volunteer community groups that conserve and restore streams across the province. • Manages watershed initiatives in British Columbia that catalyze industry, First Nations, provincial and federal governments, and other non-pro ts. • Advances science to improve the understanding of factors that limit the abundance of Paci c salmon. • Works with government to prioritize and facilitate strategic salmon conservation in the province. Web Resources: PSF.CA SALMONSAFE.CA The Pacifi c Salmon Foundation will roll out a new campaign this summer to remind anglers about their unique role in supporting Pacifi c salmon conservation. The Foundation partnered with Vancouver Sun cartoonist Graham Harrop to develop fundraising cartoons for community newspapers and online. Every year, anglers head to the West Coast to fi sh and they're required to purchase a Salmon Conservation Stamp in order to legally retain Pacifi c salmon species. Unfortunately, not all do. But proceeds from sales of the Stamp are a particularly important source of funding for volunteer-led and community-based salmon conservation, with $7.75 million directed to the Community Salmon Program since 1989. Last year, the Foundation worked with a group of MPs to return 100 per cent of Stamp income to B.C.; now all Stamp proceeds are returned through the Foundation, generating an additional $1 million for community grants. Thanks to this new funding, the Pacifi c Salmon Foundation celebrated its largest round of funding to community projects this year. Stewardship groups in 72 communities across B.C. and in the Yukon benefi tted from $1.5 million in grants for 121 projects with a total project value of $9 million through additional support for projects in the form of in-kind, labour and money. The projects will focus on habitat restoration, salmon enhancement, education and community awareness. ■ A NEW ANGLE FOR SUPPORT This year, anglers get a chuckle-worthy reminder to purchase their Salmon Conservation Stamp
