JULY 2014 BCBUSINESS 19 BCBUSINESS.CA Wag the Dog "Mining Industry Fights Back Against Environmentalists" (bcbusiness.ca/natu ral-resources) demands a response. The mining industry wants to create the larg- est open-pit mine and associated hydro electric dams and acid-generating mine tailings the world's ever known, in one of the most productive salmon sheries in Southeast Alaska and B.C., not to men- tion one of the most culturally important watersheds for the people who have lived here for thousands of years. And the people who are concerned about the future of salmon habitat and clean water are labelled as environmental radicals? Sounds like Big Oil marketing strategists. Daven Hafey Southeast Alaska Guidance Association Juneau, Alaska Surrey to See You Go Surrey is a city in transition. The pace of change is frenetic but you can see (and feel) a new downtown core emerging. There's no point in "blaming" Dianne Watts for the crime in Surrey (bcbusi ness.ca/people, "Business Leaders React to Departing Mayor Dianne Watts"). We've always had a healthy dose of it. It's a complex problem particularly with the diverse mix of ethnic communities and unique characteristics within the various communities (cities within the city). As a South Surrey resident, I am grate- ful we are not inviting a hornet's nest of criminal activity into our community with a shiny new casino (under the guise of a "convention centre"). If I need a con- vention centre, I'll drive downtown. Looking forward to seeing Dianne bust her next move. And to all the crit- ics, please step up and wave your magic wands as the new Mayors of Surrey and eradicate crime in our city. That is not to say there isn't work to be done... there is. It is one of many ongoing challenges the new mayor and council will need to face. Justin Malczewski South Surrey, B.C.
