After months and months of rain, the sun shines a spotlight on our spectacular city, reminding us just how fortunate we are to live in such a stunning place. But beyond the beauty there is so much to do by the time June rolls around that we decided to dedicate this issue to celebrating summer in VanCity. From local fairs to festivals just a few hours out of town, our summer events tipsheet and out-of-town weekend guide will have you wondering how to squeeze it all in. You'll also need to make room for all the delicious treats that pair perfectly with summer fun. Whether you're craving ice cream, a picnic or the tastiest street food, we tempt you with Vancouver's most mouth- watering outdoor cuisine. All that eating means you're going to want to burn o a few calories, and summer is the ideal time to hike one of our local mountains. So we sent our associate editor Michael Small up Grouse to lose his Grind virginity with tness guru Tommy Europe – megaphone in hand – coaching him on. We hope this article will be the rst of a series called "Small's Big Adventures," so let us know what you think of this rst instalment. If you'd rather stay home, but still enjoy being outside, we feature the season's hottest trends in outdoor entertaining. And since you've got to look good while you're keeping so busy, we also highlight summer's sweetest swimwear and sandals. So take this playbook and get outside, Vancouverites. If you nd a moment (because we know your calendar is going to be full), tell us what you think about your new city magazine and how you're living it up in our incredible city. We love getting your feedback. Janine Verreault Editor, BCLiving jverreault@canadawide.com / @BCLiving Photographer Clinton Hussey shot this month's feature stories on swimsuits (p. 21), the best ice cream in the city (p. 62) and picnic baskets (p. 64). What I enjoyed most about this photo shoot is working with a great team – it was a fun time with the BCLiving crew. One way I like to enjoy summer in the city is to go boating around Indian Arm. My favourite fl avour of ice cream is salted caramel from Earnest Ice Cream. Also, I tried the pistachio from Gelateria Dolce Amore during the shoot, so that's another favourite now. Lisa Manfi eld wrote this month's story on out-of- town getaways (p. 43). One thing I learned from working on this piece is that The King lives, and he descends upon Penticton every summer. My go-to place for ice cream is Earnest Ice Cream. They've got a salted dark chocolate that has stolen my heart, though any shade of chocolate will usually do the trick. Food stylist Jennifer Stamper styled this month's feature on the best ice cream in the city (p. 62). What I enjoyed most about this assignment was sampling all the gelato! The most challenging part was sculpting the scoops once they were threaded onto the wire. My favourite patio in the city is Dockside at the Granville Island Hotel. One way I like to enjoy summer in the city is to go swimming in the ocean, especially in the early evening before dinner. Contributors p10-11_EdsNote.indd 11 2014-05-15 1:29 PM
