Crowdfunding
Nice to see these proposed changes to
startup funding ("BCSC
Proposes New
Startup Crowdfunding Rules," bcbusi
ness.ca/finance), but the current offer-
ing memorandum exemption that's
already in place trumps those propos-
als, especially if it can be tweaked a bit to
eliminate audited statements for start-
ups but add in better governance and
stewardship and plain language busi-
ness plan disclosure. We've had crowd-
funding in B.C. for over a decade thanks
to the B.C. Securities Commission, but
very few know about it and it has cre-
ated many misunderstandings. We have
it; let's use it. By the way, crowdfunding
really means going public. We also had a
junior exchange in B.C. for that purpose
decades ago. Are we going full circle?

Gender Trouble
Your April 2014 edition featuring the
Top 30 Under 30 includes just six out
of 30—one in five—women. I am often
embarrassed that we, as men, cannot
seem to find more equal representation
for women in these types of profiles and
in the business world generally, and this
profile only adds to my embarrassment.
Surely we can do better and surely there
were more than six women deserving of
your attention.

Minding the Farm
GPS monitoring can serve two very dif-
ferent purposes ("Big Brother," Mar. '14).
On the up side, it can measure effective-
ness and efficiency to provide infor-
mation about operational changes to
improve the company. However, it can
also make the bold statement, "We don't
trust you." If it is for the purpose of cre-
ating change, the monitoring should
be timely and long enough to measure
the success of change. If it is because
of trust issues, the monitoring should
only exist until trust has been earned
and ability has been proven.
GPS moni-
toring says a lot to your employees,
so make sure they know the reasons
for your monitoring and if trust is the
issue, be sure to talk about it.
