It was nearly demolished in the 1930s, however, when developers offered the church big money for the land. Public outcry over the plot marked the first shift in local sentiment toward the preservation of heritage sites. 9 Robson Square a public plaza and landmark civic centre, robson Square was the work of modernist architect arthur erickson. with the vancouver law courts on one side and the Vancouver Art Gallery on the other, the square is anchored by the foundations of society – the law and the arts – while underneath the square are government offices, supporting the people. 10 Robson Street nicknamed "robsonstrasse" in the 1950s for the wealth of German delis and restaurants that populated it, today this stretch of sidewalk has an international, cosmopolitan feel and is better known for chic shops, high-end fashion and excellent people-watching. end your tour with a shopping spree or a cup of joe at one of the many local coffee shops.
