to deliver the project, which included over 20 firms. "We implemented a BIM-based delivery strategy that was embraced by all major disciplines and the construction manager, PCL, to design, coordinate, bid and construct the building," says Grant Van Iderstine, Smith Carter's principal. "We worked with Antoine Predock's office from the start of schematic design through construction to navigate the esthetic, functional, technical and code issues in delivering this extraordinary project." PCL Constructors Canada Inc. began construction of the museum in April 2009. "The complicated geometry and large atrium spaces made getting access to the work locations a huge challenge," says Rob Duerksen, PCL's construc- tion manager. "A tremendous amount of planning and engineering had to go into the temporary support structures, crane lifts, scaffolding and other access equipment before the work even began, and it had to take into account how many trades needed to use the access equipment, for what purpose, for how long and how these temporary installa- tions would impact other trades. Almost every part of the museum is unique, so there was very little repetition. This required an exceptional, highly skilled labour force and consistent, profes- sional supervision." PCL employed new construction technologies on the project. "This is the first large-scale project in Canada to use 3-D modelling in a Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) approach across all consultant and contractor groups," says Duerksen. "One example of the many interesting design features is the cloud glazing, which has a ceramic frit [small dots] that filter 60 per cent of the sunlight to limit the solar gain in the garden atrium." ■ LOCATION 85 Israel Asper Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba OWNER/DEVELOPER Canadian Museum for Human Rights DESIGN ARCHITECT Antoine Predock Architect PC ARCHITECT OF RECORD Smith Carter Architects & Engineers CONSTRUCTION MANAGER PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
