While the initial stages of their wedding planning had been "a lot of musing," Hallis says confirming Brix Restaurant & Wine Bar in Yaletown as their venue allowed everything else to "fall into place." With the help of décor experts Delovely Creative, the couple began plans to execute their "nostalgic, vintage, retro vibe" — a vision best described as "like something from a Wes Anderson movie." Erica-May designed the invites, RSVP and escort cards, and together the couple came up with the idea for table names, using meaningful words from their relationship. Each word was displayed on the table with Scrabble letters and accompanied by a framed definition, cherished items such as old novels, and other collectibles reflecting Erica-May and Hallis's personalities. Dedicating time each week to crafting was key to creating the DIY elements of their day, notes Erica-May. "She did such a great job," Hallis says proudly. "It was her project for quite some time. I'd come in with my own abstract ideas and she'd whittle them down into something real." The end result was a uniquely personal celebration in the company of 90 friends and family. The day was infused with character in every way, from Hallis's comic book in hand at the couple's first look, to the typewriter-made escort cards and individualized guest tables. The couple say listening to vendor recommendations, along with a wedding planner's ability to streamline and expedite the preparations, were two of their most helpful tools. But their most important piece of advice? "Remember the real reason why you're there, and why everyone else is there with you," says Hallis.
