Located in the Webber Greens subdivision, Lewis Estates Retirement Residence is the fourth community project in Edmonton and 20th across Canada for All Seniors Care Living Centres – a company that prides itself on being dedicated to providing superior facilities and services for Alberta's growing number of seniors. "Our commitment to Age-In–Place living means services, amenities and activities are available to preserve independence, provide peace of mind, and ensure quality of life throughout the years at this beautiful facility," according to the company's website. Winnipeg-based Stride Development provided site selection, contract negotiation, planning and development consultation services for this prestigious first-class retirement residence. Architect David Watkin conceived the project using the highest standards in design, features and services to create an all-inclusive luxury experience for seniors. Watkin has worked on a number of retirement residents across the country, including Laurel Heights Retirement Residence – another All Seniors Care Living Centres project – that opened in Edmonton in 2012. Construction of the concrete and steel building began in early 2011. It has been approached much like a condominium building rather than a retirement home and has its own mini environment. The 171 suite, fourstorey seniors home features a variety of spacious one- and two-bedroom units designed to modern standards. Using contemporary styling and elegant appointments, the units at Lewis N Lewis Estates Retirement Residence p82-83Lewis.indd 83 Estates Retirement Residence feature kitchenettes, state-of-the-art bathrooms, individual climate controls and a balcony or patio. Residents can choose from a variety of suite layouts and a range of services that are intended to create a stimulating, creative and active community-based lifestyle for those who live there and those who visit. Its dining room is a beautifully appointed place to experience delicious, nutritionally balanced meals prepared on site by a Red Seal certified chef. "In all of our residences menus are carefully planned to help ensure you enjoy delicious, nutritiously balanced meals every day. Whether you are enjoying your meal in our fine dining room or lounging in the bistro, your dining experience is our priority – hallmarks of our commitment to excellence in providing gracious retirement living," according to All Seniors Care Living Centres. Residents can also enjoy an active lifestyle as the building features an aquatic centre with spa and fitness room, billiards and games room, and multi-purpose hobby and crafts room. They can also take part in scheduled group outings and social, cultural and recreational programs. "The full-time director of health and wellness will lead many daily activities designed to challenge, inspire and entertain even the most discerning and active seniors," according to a company press release. There's also a library, Internet lounge, bistro coffee lounge, movie theatre, tuck shop, non-denominational chapel and hair salon on site. In addition to a weekly housekeeping service, linen and towel service, and dry cleaning pick up and delivery, laundry facilities are situated on each floor. Security in the residence has been enhanced with emergency call systems and on-site staff that are available 24 hours a day, and units have been designed for wheelchair accessibility with bathroom grab rails. Edmonton-based Stellar Electrical provided the complete electrical installation for the project. This included a two-stage fire alarm system, nurse call system, public address system, door access/egress, low voltage lighting control, telephone and data requirements, security/closed circuit video and television, and back up generators. David Pohl, president of Stellar Electrical, says that while the company has completed the electrical installation on several similar buildings, the team was impressed with the additional elements incorporated into the electrical design. "It's the little extras that stand out, like providing each resident suite with a separate receptacle, and light fixtures that are wired to the emergency power generator. In the event of a power failure, the residents will still have power available on that receptacle and lighting from that light fixture," says Pohl. He adds that every minute detail has been well thought out during the construction of this project and that it is obvious that additional costs have gone into ensuring residents at Lewis Estates Retirement Residence can benefit from superior facilities like the saltwater swimming pool, the theatre room and the chapel. "This is a welldesigned, well-constructed building that will provide many years of comfortable living for their residents. We are proud to have been selected for the electrical installation," Pohl says. Interior design was dedicated to creating a homey, comfortable, residential environment. "Our design cues are oriented towards ease of wayfinding, and helping residents feel at ease with the surroundings," says Tamara Nyysola, manager, interior design, HSA Design Inc. "We selected finishes that speak to traditional materials, such as two-tone wood stains." Distinct colour palettes on each of the four levels help distinguish one from the other, and artwork was chosen to complement the schemes. Durability and safety were prime considerations in material selections, Nyysola says. Located close to three parks and a 18-hole championship golf course, the building is surrounded by landscaped walking paths encouraging residents to get out and make the most of the green space. Grocery stores and restaurants are also located close by, creating a true neighbourhood feeling to the Lewis Estates area. Nearby services include the Edmonton Transit System bus terminal and the Misericordia Hospital. Lewis Estates Retirement Residence joins nearly two dozen other All Seniors Care Living Centres across Canada from Alberta to Quebec. n december 2013    /83 13-11-15 4:19 PM
