was highly valued. "The daily routines of the home – and how residents participate in them – were considered in all aspects," Peters observes. From an architectural perspective, Peters notes that the new Centre is attached to the existing hospital and the powerhouse building, which were also important considerations in designing the new facility. Wayne Pierrepont, the capital projects director for Heartland Health Region, explains that building around the powerhouse building took advantage of available space and helped keep costs down. The design also allows for appropriate connections to a future integrated health centre when the existing hospital is replaced. "From an esthetic point of view, the new facility has a more residential appearance, with sloped metal roofs in white, and board and batten siding in cobble stone, arctic white and evening blue," Peters explains. Durable materials such as sheet vinyl flooring and rigid vinyl wall panels used as wainscoting provide a residential look and feel, while also delivering low maintenance costs over the life of the building. The residential flavour extends to the common area, where the five cottages are grouped around a central "downtown" that features a multipurpose community meeting room, a chapel, a hair salon and a café for gatherings with family members. Pierrepont says that while the idea of configuring facilities as homes, or pods, has been around for years, the design of the houses stands out in his mind. Total Area 48,500 square feet Total Construction Cost $24.5 million Mike Chyzowski, the president of Quorex Construction Services Ltd., the general contractor for the project, notes that construction proceeded smoothly, in spite of the extremely wet spring and summer of 2012, a critical period when the excavation and foundation work took place, and the unusually long and cold winter of 2012/2013, which also affected productivity. The company found labourers and tradespeople in the local community, the provincial trades and labour pool, and in some cases by bringing in trades from out-of-province. Chyzowski observes that the geometric shape of the building was an interesting aspect of the project, particularly at the structural steel wall and roof connection points. Advancements in steel fabrication technology and the ability to transfer electronic design files have made the process of structural steel fabrication and erection much more efficient than in the past with a project of this nature, Chysowski says. Peters notes that the Centre includes many energy-efficiency features, and that energy modeling to test assumptions was part of the design process. The building's high performance envelope includes fibreglass-framed, triple glaze windows, including highlevel clerestory windows that bring plenty of natural light deep into the interior, both for the well-being of the residents and staff, but also to reduce reliance on artificial lighting. "The structure is steel and is intended to last a long time," Peters says. "White was chosen for the metal roof to be more reflective and reduce heat gain. The high-performance HVAC system meets the building's high fresh air/ventilation requirements and includes a heat recovery ventilation system. For even heat, efficiency and comfort the Centre will use radiant in-floor heat." Pierrepont adds that the facility was designed to meet LEED Silver standards. When the 54-bed Centre opens in early 2014, incoming residents will include 28 residents of the Wheatland Centennial Lodge and 21 residents in a long-term care wing of the Rosetown and District Health Centre. n Download your free Award iPad edition now available on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/award-magazine/id703168615 Rosetown and District Health Centre – Long Term Care p60-63Rosetown.indd 63 december 2013    /63 13-11-15 4:00 PM
