Blanco Canada's Silgranit sink. combining the best of double-basin and single-basin qualities: large pots and pans can be easily moved around thanks to the low-lying divider, but filling the smaller basin is still possible when necessary. The generous, nine-inch-deep cast iron sink (which is guaranteed not to chip, crack or burn) is the best of both worlds, and installation is simple thanks to the self-trimming feature on the Whitehaven. Antoniolupi sinks, distributed by Ambient Bathrooms, are the perfect example of this modern trend. The Italian-designed basins are bold statement pieces that work equally well in residential and commercial settings. Julia Ilnitchi of Ambient Bathrooms has noticed the shift from traditional styles to edgier designs. "It used to be just square and round, but now there's more shapes. These new designs bring an architectural feature to the space." Integrated sinks, she notes, are particularly popular – a new twist on the classic pedestal. The Strappo, designed by Domenico de Palo, is a particularly good example of the trend: clean lines, sharp angles and a minimalist look that blends almost seamlessly with the wall. Particularly in powder rooms, where space is at a premium, the integrated look can be the best esthetic option. For instances when a vanity is preferable, the minimalist style can still be achieved with pieces like the Foglio by Mario Ferrarini for Antoniolupi, which suspends an ultra-shallow, rectangular sink on a countertop for a cool, clean esthetic finish. For commercial projects, colour and style may Sinks p38-41Sinks.indd 41 be less important, but sustainability is always a top priority. Made from 90 per cent recycled stainless steel (sourced in North America) and manufactured using "green power," Novanni Stainless Inc. has been recognized by National Resources Canada for its commitment to energy efficiency. "Novanni is the only Canadian-owned company manufacturing stainless steel sinks in Canada," says Jake MacDonald who represents Blanco Canada. The sleek Crosstown sink features 15-millimetre corners for easier cleaning, 18 gauge nickel-bearing stainless steel and Sound Guard undercoating, which dampens sound and reduces condensation. Commercially, Novanni's innovative water fountain and bottle filling stations embrace that ecospirit, too. The vandal-resistant stations are equipped with a Green Ticker to provide immediate feedback, a 3000-gallon capacity WaterSentry Plus filtration system and an LED visual filter monitor. From shape, to colour, to material, to size, today's sinks are almost infinitely customizable. The only problem you'll have now is deciding where to begin. n december 2013    /41 13-11-15 3:42 PM
