A trip through the changing landscape of METROTOWN,
LOUGHEED, EDMONDS and BRENTWOOD — four distinct,
sustainable neighbourhoods that weave together to
form the City of Burnaby. by tiffany sloan
From abundant green space and urban amenities
to affordability,
business-friendly policies and a proud sense of community, those who live and work in
Burnaby have a lot to be thankful for.
It's no matter of luck. Rather, it's the faithful build-out of the strategic plan developed by
the City in the 1970s. "Given Burnaby's proximity to downtown Vancouver, it didn't make
sense to have one central business district for Burnaby," explains Johannes Schumann, a
community planner with the City of Burnaby. "So it was envisioned to have four individual
town centres that met the needs of each of the four quadrants of the city, each one being
a complete community that has office, multi-family residential, commercial and proximate
industrial uses supporting it, and each serviced by a rapid-transit hub."
