As of August, construction on the facility was proceeding on schedule and budget, with some of the wings completed and drywalling taking place. Completion is scheduled for spring of 2014. Vandergaag describes his company's ownership of the community health clinic as "an unexpected opportunity we were glad to take. It served the Fraser Health Authority's administrative needs, and for us we have a long-term 12,000 square metres Derek Lepper ensure that employees share the same benefits as residents. The facility's dining rooms, flooded with daylight from windows facing the internal courtyard, were designed to promote socialization and interaction. They are located at the crux of the two residential units and serve as a community square. Vandergaag points out that the design-build team commenced work during Christmas of 2011 and broke ground on the community health clinic in May of 2012, with construction of the campus of care following in July. "We essentially had six months to fulfill all of our design duties," he says. "That's an extremely small window, but it was sufficient considering that under designbuild all the conceptual work was basically done by the time we got on board. We started building the campus of care two months before the construction drawings were finished, although once again the tight timelines proved not to be a problem." The biggest challenge for VanMar was supplying wood framing in segmented sections, which was necessary given the radial arms of the campus of care. "This made duties such as roughing-in quite a task, and that's why we took great care selecting the best electricians, mechanical people and other sub-trades early on, to ensure Combined Total cost $36-million investment with a guaranteed client." Farrow is enthusiastic about the impact the completed facilities will have in the region. "We believe that one of the strongest needs for the human condition is to be part of a welcoming community. Users of the health centre and the campus of care will be able to be treated in their own community, near their families, in an inspiring lightbathed environment," says Farrow. Dr. Nigel Murray, president and CEO of the Fraser Health Authority, told the press upon the completion of the community health centre that the project is "a model for other communities in the Fraser Valley and is an outstanding example of how collaboration and a shared vision can lead to innovation and improved outcomes for the people we serve." Vandergaag describes the designbuild team as "a great working relationship, and as for the facilities, they are a classic example of all the elements coming together the way they should." n october 2013 /69 13-09-13 4:04 PM
