"The structural steel is moving daily just from temperature luctuations," says Jakob. "You are trying to assemble the building with a inal tolerance on the metal panels in the millimetres." The curtainwall system came as unitized sections to meet the demanding schedule, and that presented challenges in hoisting and getting the units shipped. "Some were built here but a lot were built in Ontario," says Jakob. "Once built, there's no changing them so they had better arrive correct. Inspecting what we expected was a major factor in successfully meeting our milestones." CONSTRUCTION MANAGER PCL Construction Management Ltd. TOTAL AREA 446,000 square feet of new space 167,000 square feet of renovated space TOTAL BUDGET $1 billion TOTAL CONSTRUCTION BUDGET $300 million PCL met a tight, fast-tracked deadline for the expansion to the terminal building in two ways. The company employed a common scaffolding system that moved on a strict schedule every three to four weeks. "The building has a high ceiling structure and all the subtrades share the system," says Jakob. "But when it was meant to move, it moved. If you have a scaffold system that occupies 10,000 to 15,000 square feet and you don't move it when it is supposed to move, there are implications on materials procurement, manpower and sequencing." Construction also started in two different places simultaneously, and moved in three different directions. The building footprint comprises a 330-metre-long rectangular section with an angular hammerhead at one end. One crew started at one end of the angular section and worked towards the other end, while two other crews started midway along the main section and worked in opposite directions. "Because of this strategy almost everyone needed three different crews," says Jakob. "It was the only way it worked. If we'd built it via the traditional method where you start at one end and work around it would have cost us up to 12 months." "From every aspect of the design, the material choices and the quality of the workmanship, it all worked together," says Jakob. "It is a very progressive building." ■ Proud to be a part of the project team for the Grande Prairie Care Centre. mandrplumbing@telus.net Congratulations to Nahanni Construction on a job well done!
