For its efforts, the company was awarded the 2011 Institutional Project of the Year during the World of Concrete/World of Masonry conference in Las Vegas. Vancouver's City Hall required re inishing the facility's stone exterior using a variety of techniques, replacing masonry patches that had weathered poorly over the decades, and cutting new patches in other areas via the Dutchman repair method. Gracom Masonry project manager Tyler Williamson told the press during the height of restoration last year that his crew was also addressing water run-off issues and that existing mortar joints in exposed areas were being re-pointed. "We are also removing a harder mortar used during a past restoration and replacing it with a softer one that is more like what they used in past times," he said. As part of The Clifford Group, Clifford Restoration Limited is renowned throughout the provinces for its vast experience in masonry-related renovations and upgrades, and its work on The Bow/York Hotel project in Calgary is a good example of its prowess (it had to completely document, dismantle and salvage the historic York Hotel's friezes for cleaning, restoring and rebuilding). But Clifford Group's services are complemented by a strong product component in the form of Clifford Masonry Ltd., whose services include wall cladding, brick, block, paving, plaza redevelopment and natural stone supply and installation. The masonry and restoration components of the Clifford Group ensure that even the most demanding projects are completed on time and on budget. Arriscraft International manufactures building stone for commercial and residential projects using a technique that eliminates the need for cement or arti icial binders; the blending and production technology produces stone with natural colors, textures and shapes. For example, end users can enjoy the quality and texture of Arriscraft stone in the traditional look and size of its brick products, which have been designed to coordinate with its Renaissance product lines and are suitable for residential, commercial, and institutional applications. One of the newest products from Arriscraft is the Slate inish for Renaissance Masonry Units, which features a natural contoured texture that complements the Sandblasted, Dressed and Rocked textures. Renaissance Masonry Units match natural stone formation, resulting in exceptionally tight dimensional tolerances, high strength and density, natural absorption and superior durability. The Slate inish's cement-free formulation and high-temperature autoclave cure means the long-term shrinkage normally associated with cement-based products is insigni icant (it can be used for exterior and interior masonry veneer applications). Of all the masonry products, brick is arguably the most popular and visually pleasing. Hanson Brick, North America's largest brick manufacture, provides a variation on the traditional brick look with Vermont Brick, which is distributed in Ontario and Quebec. Hanson Brick has introduced the Brick Back Program at its Ontario facilities. In effort to reduce waste and the resulting burial in land ills, the free program accepts 'clean' brick waste to be converted into ground, recyclable material for addition to Hanson Brick's existing products. Hanson Brick will accept 'clean' brick waste at the original location of the manufactured brick. Material such as concrete block, wood, glass, steel or garbage will not be accepted. The Brick Back Program provides a way for the building industry and communities to partner with Hanson Brick in investing in Canada's infrastructure. The program also contributes to LEED credits under MR credit 2.1 and 2.2 – Construction Waste Management. "We are con ident that the Brick Back Program will increase the recycling of used materials and encourage collaboration within the industry and local communities," says Leo Stef ler, vice president and general manager of Hanson Brick in Canada. "We look forward to introducing further initiatives that support our infrastructure, environment and promote a sustainable future." The range of products from Dryvit Systems Canada Ltd. are used in conjunction with masonry and serve to protect and insulate. Dryvit Outsulation Systems are engineered, rigorously tested, highly energy-ef icient insulated cladding systems that place insulation on the outside of the wall, where experts believe it is most effective (serving as a vapour-permeable blanket for the building). "The Outsulation system that best suits projects using both masonry and EIFS depends on the technical speci ications of the given project, but all of the systems work with masonry very well," says Daniel Schlegel, Dryvit Systems Canada's marketing coordinator. "Traditions of Durham – Oshawa's newest retirement community – is a Dryvit project that beautifully combines masonry with Dryvit Custom Brick and Lymestone inishes." Dryvit Outsulation Systems can be installed in either barrier or moisture drainage con igurations. Both have been tested to perform in all climates on almost all types of commonly used construction methods, and a testament to their effectiveness is the fact that since 1969 the systems have been installed on over 400,000 projects across North America for a total material usage of over two billion square feet. ■ Vancouver's most respected masonry contractor in brick, block, stone & heritage restoration.
