"So the facilities were modernized more in equipment than in layout," Malloy says. And there were huge improvements. The biggest improvement was to the cancer care centre, which now has an entirely new canopied entrance, a brighter and more open reception area, reworked suites that are brighter and more welcoming, and spaces illed with lots of natural light. While these improvements are welcome, they did not come without challenges. Michael Petrescu-Comnene, principal engineer from the structural consulting irm Adjeleian Allen Rubeli Ltd. says that there have been changes to building codes that are much more stringent than when this part of the hospital was constructed, especially regarding the seismic design. New codes also affected the mechanical and electrical work. New power, lighting, and ire alarm systems were installed to comply with modern codes. Relocating the mechanical penthouse on Burr Wing was also challenging. However there were some innovative steps taken to meet these including the use of friction dampers. "This allowed us to add the extra loors as the dampers would absorb the extra energy," Petrescu-Comnene says. "Friction dampers are often used to absorb energy from earthquakes that would otherwise go into the building's structure. The dampers are designed to have moving parts that slide over each other to create friction that absorbs some of that energy." While earthquakes aren't usually an issue in the Kingston area, there have been mild shocks. Using the dampers on this site will also contribute to reduce the lateral drift under the high winds that come off of the lake, which could affect the building's stability. The work was more typical at the other hospital wing under construction. "The mechanical and electrical systems were pretty typical for modern hospitals. All air systems bring 100 per cent outside air to the spaces, and incorporate heat recovery systems to capture heat from the exhaust systems," says Andrew Stevenson from Genivar Inc., the company responsible for the mechanical and electrical design on the Kidd Wing. "There were two new chillers installed to add capacity to the existing cooling system and improve operational ef iciency." Improved ef iciency is important and bodes well for the future. With this project completed, Flett says they are looking forward to the next phase, which will include upgrading operating theatres, laboratories and birthing centres that are located in parts of the buildings dating back to the 1950s. "We now have, and want to continue to have, facilities that match the quality of care." ■ "Proud member of the KGH Redevelopment Team" www.genivar.com LOCATION 76 Stuart Street Kingston, Ontario OWNER Kingston General Hospital PROJECT MANAGER Infrastructure Ontario ARCHITECT HDR Architecture Associates Inc.
