From Durabuilt Windows and Doors, the Eclipse fibreglass aluminum-clad entry door. Head for the Exit Door manufacturers focus on energy efficiency and superior performance by Laurie Jones F rom replicating antique designs to creating modern, eco-friendly products, door manufacturers have systems to suit any lifestyle and budget. All Weather Windows offers a wide variety of entry doors, including the modern, pre- inished ibreglass Barrington® AvantGuard™ series. Available in rich black walnut or warm Spanish cedar inishes, the AvantGuard provides style and character along with superior performance. "There is a trend developing that is seeing consumers move away from steel to either textured or smooth ibreglass doors," says Aaron Latimer, vice president, marketing for All Weather Windows. "We provide doors in both materials, plus patio and garden doors in PVC and engineered wood. With front entry doors becoming a de ining detail of a home's character, consumers are demanding more choice and we are proud to deliver." Wood-grained textured ibreglass that looks like real wood creates a vision of luxury and lair. To round out the options available in entry door selections, All Weather Windows carries more than 35 styles of decorate glass and sidelites to add dimension, character and style. "Consumer tastes are evolving and All Weather Windows is proud to have a selection to meet those needs," says Latimer. The B.C. Building Code now requires substantial changes to the performance of doors and their components. As with windows, all doors, including swing doors, will be required to meet the new code effective November 2012. All doors will require certi ied test results that must meet the A 440-A, B and C ratings. "Keeping out water has been a challenge historically and extremely dif icult to achieve, but now doors must block all water penetration," says Casey Kerkhoff of Westeck Windows and Doors. "Many new sills are in the development process. After 18 months of research and development, Westeck Windows and Doors has developed a door sill as well as associated parts that achieve this purpose." The combination of Westeck's sill and seals, along with a sill draining system, has resulted in high A–440 - B ratings. The terms of reference required the type of sill that would allow for in- and out-swing doors to be of the same-height door/ same-height frame and that costs be the same as non-approved sills. "Westeck has met both of these challenges, eliminating the annoying problem of having to frame Doors p.28-33Doors.indd 29 in/out swing doors to different heights." Kolbe's sliding and folding doors are offered in numerous panel con igurations, a broad palette of inishes and interior wood species. Promoting a visual and physical connection with the surrounding environment, these door products are ideally suited to capture the views, natural light, fresh air and outdoor experience. "Kolbe's Folding Door Systems' panels fold back against each other to create an expansive opening," says David Castiglione, principal, Kolbe Gallery Vancouver. "Both the access and folding door panels showcase a uniform, optional 4 5/8-inch bottom rail to maximize the views even when the doors are closed." A specially designed thermal weep sill enhances the door's energy-ef iciency, while optional, concealed hardware, architecturally correct mortised hinges and other design details accentuate its traditional esthetic. For dramatically large openings, Kolbe's Ultra TerraSpan Lift and Slide doors can incorporate up to 10 panels per unit with a 12-foot maximum panel height, and can be arranged in more than 900 operational con igurations. Matching the Folding Door Systems' sightlines, these TerraSpan doors maximize the viewing area with 4 5/8-inch-wide stiles and rails, and feature architecturally correct coped corners where stiles meet rails and ADA-compliant bottom panel rails. To start 2012 off on a positive note, EuroLine Windows launched ThermoPlus, a revolutionary new ibreglass-vinyl hybrid window and door system, along with the new 2200 Series sliding patio door. ThermoPlus is made from new-generation GENEO window pro iles with a depth of 86 millimetres, combining the bene its of uPVC and ibreglass in a new hybrid material called RAU-FIPRO. "The RAU-FIPRO core forms a continuous, weldable reinforcement, while the outer layer of high-grade uPVC forms a smooth, pore-free surface," says Isbrand Funk, president of EuroLine Windows Inc. "Both layers are inseparably fused during the extrusion process, forming a monolithic structure." The corners of the frames and sashes can be welded, which is a huge advantage over conventional, mechanically connected ibreglass products, which over the years tend to start leaking air and water through these corners if they come apart.
