The RFP released by school administrators had a list of enhancements to include. Brunton says they managed to incorporate everything requested. A modern component to the Revelstoke Secondary School is the enhanced sound system for students with hearing impairments. The system was a requirement of the school district and was installed in all of the classrooms. Structural measures were also geared towards maintaining the ecofriendly construction. "We tried to use wood wherever possible, particularly in the upper loor where most of the roof is glulam beams and wood," says Justin Li, project engineer with Read Jones Christoffersen. "The beams protrude to the exterior, which give it an attractive appearance. The wood is also visible in the classrooms, creating a relaxing atmosphere." He says it was an interesting challenge to incorporate the wood with steel. "Being able to see the steel beams and having it be a real focal point is a nice change. It's de initely rewarding working on a project like this." There are over 100,000 board feet of lumber in the walls, inishing the wood-framed building. While the base is concrete and steel, the interior walls are assembled with two-by-fours and two-by-sixes. The 275-seat community theatre incorporated into the school has two fully functioning makeup rooms behind the stage. The irst production slated is the Sound of Music. The site has a campus feel, and everyone in town was eager to see the results after 18 months of construction. "On the day of the of icial opening, there was a steady stream of people from the moment it opened until closing. It was great," says Brunton. ■ FEBRUARY 2012 /77 1/23/12 10:45:07 AM
