Graham Construction's crew faced several challenges, not the least of which was building a totally new site in what was essentially a farmer's ield. The bulk of 2007 was devoted to earthwork in preparation for the wetlands; construction on the education centre commenced in 2008, but no sooner did it begin than an unusually severe winter hit. "Graham crews had to deal with 10-foot drifts," recalls Marter. "Plus, water kept looding into the region faster than it could be kept out, Ralph Klein Legacy Park and Shepard Environmental Education Centre p.70-73RKleinLegacyPk.indd 73 so dams and dykes had to be built and pumping was fairly constant." Since of icially opening in June of 2011, the Ralph Klein Legacy Park and Shepard Environmental Education Centre has become a popular Calgary destination and has attracted inquiries from other municipalities across North America. "I've had people in the U.S. tell me that this is a project they could never have pulled off," says Marter.
