Technology is not the only star of the school's new show – nature is also recognized. Huge garage doors open off the cafeteria/multi-purpose space, so students can grab their lunch and head outside. There are also doors off the dance studio that provide the same kind of low and allow for indoor/outdoor performances. The Education Centre, located next to the main entrance, features a large room with smaller conference rooms along with its own kitchen and washrooms. Gates allow for limited access to classroom wings as required. "We designed the school in such a way," van Hoek explains, "that when there is a large athletic event going on, for example, they can use the multi-purpose space and the kitchen to cater the event without people wandering throughout the school." The multiple-use nature of today's schools had to be united with ecofriendly practices and systems, as the 7071 Oakwood Drive, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada L2E 6S5 Telephone (905) 356-1581 • Fax (905) 354-2077 1-800-461-1NPC (1672) Email: npc@computan.on.ca Website: www.niacoat.com Niagara Coatings.indd 1 2/22/10 11:08:28 AM school required a LEED Gold certi ication. The project more than met expectations and is on track to divert 95 per cent of all construction waste from the land ill. A 180-ton geothermal ield was built to heat and cool the school. Energy ef iciency was increased by the addition of two heat-recovery coils in the exhaust air system. Hightech occupancy sensors and daylight sensors have been installed in all the classrooms to help save energy along with high-quality light ixtures. Specialized light ixtures are also being utilized in the parking lot to avoid light pollution and wasted power. These conscientious decisions are all part of good design practice as it applies to the new model of learning. Sales says the design-build team hit the mark in building a school that works, is well-wired and well-made. Grant + Sinclair's design team says that from the start, the aim was to provide a light- illed natural indoor environment that is healthy for those who spend their day at school. According to Sales, one has only to look at the students' faces to see the results of an excellent job. ■ FEBRUARY 2012 /61 1/23/12 10:38:49 AM
