LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg Inc. TOTAL AREA 170,000 square feet TOTAL PROJECT COST $61.8 million It was thanks to innovations like this that the new BSC achieved LEED Gold. According to Adam Juck, an associate at the mechanical and electrical engineering irm MCW Consultants Ltd., the newly installed systems were required to provide plenty of fresh air and which had to be closely coordinated with the work being implemented by the structural engineers. The system will ultimately use approximately 41 per cent less energy than a standard reference building of this sort. The new waterto-water heat pump system contributes greatly to this performance. Gone is what Champion calls, "a dark and cramped rat warren of labs. Now there's open lab space, so as research teams expand and contract they don't have to be shoehorned into a room. We also created breakout spaces where people could meet. The team wanted places where they could chat with peers and learn from one another." These state-of-the art research and teaching facilities, including laboratories, aquaria, informal research spaces, classrooms, seminar rooms and a tiered 70-seat classroom, make ample use of durable light-coloured wood and glass to maximize the sense of space, and there is a repetition of the botanical and zoological images printed on glass to assist with way inding. "Where we get our greatest satisfaction," concludes Ostry, "is being able to create spaces that re lect the people who use them. It's one of the principles of our practice to observe what people do in their space. I can't say enough good things about UBC Renew, Mike Champion, the faculty and the students. It wouldn't have been a success without all those partners." ■ We wish Scott Construction Group continued success 3R Demolition Corp. 5735 Beresford Street, Burnaby, B.C.
