Whatever one thinks, architects build for a greater audience, designing for the benefit of the general public. The fruit of our labour is quite often critiqued, affected, occupied, sold and commented on by the intelligent, the able and non-able bodied, the ecologically concerned, the disenchanted and admirers, to mention a few – basically anyone who cares to spend a moment in our built environment. Regardless of whether the work is a private home, a community centre, church or an institution, its domain is the public realm. So why do we design? I believe that we design for those who put their trust in us to build better communities, enhance the lives of those who are both inside and outside of our work. We are also responsible to those who advocate for us, such as our clients who believe that we can create livable communities through proper planning and design and improve climate by creating responsible buildings. These advocates could also be architects, but more than likely they are the individuals who are employed by municipal government, are realtors, investors, bankers, developers and politicians, to name a few. They are the real advocates who champion our work to other government officials, banks, clients and society as a whole. They too have a vision and this vision may be the same as ours – to create safe, responsible, functional buildings, and a better place for all – huge aspirations really – an enormous responsibility – but also the very reason we got into this profession. During the summer at the Festival of Architecture in Newfoundland, one 'responsible' Fellow spoke about the responsibility we have as professionals to create smart – maybe not pretty – functional, sustainable public buildings, in effect, buildings which promote the betterment of humankind. Well said, and perfectly timed; we need to rethink our role in society. One of these roles could be to focus on the real advocates, those who are on the front lines in the community, speaking on our behalf. The other is to bring responsibly designed buildings into the public realm. The Metro Vancouver Chapter of Architecture Canada has been focused on recognizing this type of advocacy for the past three years. October marked the fourth anniversary of the Advocates for Architecture Awards, an event celebrating the individuals or organizations who, through their vision and extraordinary efforts, make a significant contribution to our society. The goal of the Advocates for Architecture Awards is to recognize members of the community, architectural professionals, emerging practitioners and organizations whose efforts have inspired a dialogue of critical issues relevant to the building industry and has contributed to society's increased awareness and appreciation of the significant role architecture plays in all our lives. Architecture Canada has that unique responsibility to re-position us in the public eye as responsible professionals. We have a vision, one that concerns everyone. ■ december 2012  p06-07RAIC.indd 7   /7 11/16/12 3:16 PM
