Clouds were gathering in the late summer sky, but Scott
Phillips and his wife Mary Ann had promised their children
Cassia and James a camping trip. The family set up camp
quickly so the children could frolic on Air Force Beach. "They
played while helicopters and planes flew overhead, along with
this flock of sandpipers," remembers Phillips. "James, being
three, was afraid of the large number of birds flying so close."
The decisive moment captured in this
image is haunting and magical…. The
boy's position makes one feel this is a
truly spontaneous image. The flying birds
make this photograph a joyous moment,
celebrating our province's wealth of
nature. Here is an image that happens
only once in a lifetime.

One of those rare moments when
everything comes together in a good
way, at the right time: lighting,
colour, wildlife…. Awesome!
