Each year, the staff and volunteers at
the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical
Chinese Garden observe the winter
solstice with a display of lanterns in
different shapes and sizes. Julius
Reque prepared for this "blue hour"
shot by using a "fast, versatile lens," a
tripod, a release cable—and by
wearing fingerless gloves.

Mike Lane used a slower shutter
speed to capture this image of a
young Aboriginal dancer in her
vibrant regalia at a Butchart Gardens
event. "So many people have digital
cameras today," he says. "To be
noticed, you either have to be very
good, or else be very different. I try
to be different and to develop my
own style."
