Hall / Nikon D80 1/250s; f11; ISO 100; 20mm; converted to B&W Location: Mount Dione, Coast Mountains This dramatic location in southern B.C. had been on Michael Hall's bucket list for years before he finally made a multi-day trip there with friends. "I think the photo expresses what I love most about being in the mountains," says Hall, a professional photographer. "We come to these places to feel small and humbled by the extremes of the alpine." Judges' comments " The photographer's choice to record this scene in black and white makes it so powerful. One can feel the struggle and danger of these two men climbing in this wonderful image. —Grant Faint " " Cormac Flynn took this photograph in January, while waiting his turn to climb the frozen falls. "It was a very atmospheric setting, with a wide sheet of ice and a torrent of water still flowing on the left side of the falls," he says. "This photo helps me remember a great winter day in the B.C. outdoors." This imposing black and white shot has Ansel Adams written all over it. Excellent contrasting projects a sense of foreboding. —Ken Seabrook " B r itish C o lumbia M agazine • fal l 2 0 1 3 45
