With reference to your Summer 2013 issue and coverage of the beaches ["This way to the beach"], I was sorry not to see more about English Bay beach—I spent countless days there when I was a girl in the 1930s. I loved the article and pictures of the other beaches. My brother and sister-in-law reside in Vancouver and graciously give me a subscription each year to British Columbia Magazine, which I enjoy to the utmost. gene barton Miller Fort Davis, TX welcoming wuikinuxv nation I've been transplanted from Calgary to White rock back to Calgary and liked reading about a town close to us—Field [Destination, "Field of dreams"] in the Summer 2013 magazine. I thought I would pass this on to any history buffs—a wonderful map is available for download on the historical sites of Field at friendsofyoho.ca. Click on the "Walking Tour" link on the home page. gord newel Calgary, AB next generation reader I love your magazines. I'm 12 years old and I read all of the time. I just started getting your magazines. My dad has been getting them for a long time and I read them when I'm at his place. I love them, so I talked my mom into getting them. I'm so glad she said yes. aleia James Williams lake, BC A good catch In your Spring 2013 issue, I enjoyed the article about rivers Inlet ["reviving rivers Inlet"]. I was raised and educated in Vancouver and can fondly remember my father, a commercial fisherman at the time, leaving for three months during the sockeye salmon run, and always taking his catch to rivers Inlet canneries. My auntie left England around 1920 and built a ranch Conversation starter I was delighted with your bit of history [Due West, "Where have all the gobblers gone?" Winter 2012]. The garbage gobbler gave our family a great conversation piece as we travelled to campgrounds via the HopePrinceton Highway and along the Fraser Canyon route. Each summer we packed our tent and headed out for great adventures with our two sons Doug and glenn and later with our third boy, Peter. Thank you for a wonderful article, John Threlfall. Janet Duxbury Burnaby, BC On ASSIGnMenT Whether her work involves sifting for artifacts on a storm-swept beach, following wolf tracks, or exploring the plight of urban pigeons, there's no typical day for Victoria-based Jude isabella, an award-winning science writer and editor who wrote "The secret lives of bears" (p. 20) for this issue. Isabella was raised in Nutley, New Jersey, but her sense of adventure led her to Canada's West Coast, and since then she Jude Isabella has hiked, kayaked, and cycled around the province researching articles and books. While her recent focus has been B.C.'s salmon (the subject of an upcoming book), our feature led her research farther up the food chain. Even deep in bear country, bruins can be surprisingly tough to find, she says. "They mind their own business. They're busy living." B rIT IS H C olUMBIA MAgAZI NE • FAll 2013 ToBIN SToKES Mapping Field's history Thank you for the article "reviving rivers Inlet" [Spring 2013]. Many memories came flooding back, as I worked out of goose Bay with the federal Department of Fisheries as a summer student in 1968 and 1969. I met many members of the Walkus clan and partook in some traditional meals, particularly with Danny Walkus who was a Fishery guardian at the time. We were test fishing for salmon smolt numbers on oweekeno lake as well as conducting salmon dead count recovery programs in the fall. The year 1968 saw one of the last huge sockeye runs in rivers and Smith inlets. The Wuikinuxv Nation was most hospitable and warm to this 17 year old from the lower Mainland and I cherish these memories from a simpler time. glen todd Wardner, BC up towards Quesnel lake. Her daughter (my cousin) in due course married outdoor writer and editor Art Downs. Consequently, we have been sent copies of your magazine for so many years—we even got one issue sent via the gold rush Trail Sled Dog Mail run in the Quesnel area! Ten years ago, on our first visit to Quesnel, we met our good friends Vicki and Jack Nelson. They arranged for us to continue receiving your magazine ever since. We have visited the Nelsons in Quesnel three times in the last six years, stopping at Auntie's old ranch, Barkerville, and many more places. It was interesting to read about Hope in the Spring 2013 issue [Destination, "Finding Hope"]. We were there last spring. It was such a lovely write up about such a lovely place. The articles in every issue are so interesting to read and the photographs . . . WoW! I pass the magazine on to our local high school and they are used in their geography classes.
