Downed wires may not throw sparks and should always be treated as live and extremely dangerous. ENERGY STAR COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS (CFL) • CFLs use approximately 75 per cent less energy and can last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. • CFLs come in different colours: warm white, soft white and natural or daylight. • Use CFLs in hard to reach places, so you don't have to replace bulbs as often. • Specific CFLs are designed to work in dimmable or 3-way fixtures. STEP 1 If there's a downed power line, stay at least a bus-length away, which is 10 metres (33 feet). ENERGY STAR LIGHT EMITTING DIODES (LED) • LEDs use at least 75 per cent less energy than incandescent lighting, and can last 25,000 hours, or 22 to 25 years, based on average household use. That's approximately 15 to 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs, and about 3 times longer than CFLs. • The light comes on quickly when turned on. • Dimmable LEDs don't flicker. • LEDs are available in traditional bulb shapes and fit easily into most existing fixtures. READ THE MANUFACTURER'S LABEL • CFLs and LEDs are available in a variety of different shapes and sizes and can be installed in a variety of fixtures. • Look for the ENERGY STAR label; it identifies products that have been tested to meet operating, reliability and energy efficiency criteria.
