Wooden benches filled with guests, and the rabbi, who would perform the traditional Jewish ceremony, took her place under the chupah, a canopy created from birch trunks and a piece of heirloom lace. "When it came to the ceremony, I wanted to keep everything as traditional as possible," says Alissa, adding that her family, as well as one side of David's, is Jewish. "There's beautiful intention and meaning behind the vows: 'I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me.' " Once David broke the glass (a symbol, some say, of the loving care a fragile union requires), a shofar (ram's horn) was sounded to mark the Jewish New Year (which occurs each September); shouts of "mazel tov" erupted from the gallery. The newlyweds, aglow, stole a private moment before joining family and friends for cocktails and antipasto in a tent strung with lights.
