6 P o r t r ai t : A l ai n a M i c h e ll e B C B U S I N E S S . C A M AY 2 0 24 B-SHE BUSINESS Sometimes, it's impossible to not feel imposter syndrome. Take, for example, appearing in the opening pages of this magazine. At the best of times, it can be a little uncomfortable seeing my face staring back at me. When it's our fifth annual Women of the Year issue, it feels downright silly. At the top of our masthead is publisher and Canada Wide Media (BCBusiness's parent company) CEO Ryan Benn. Then there's me, ace art director Edwin Pabellon and a few contributing writers, like Josh Blair ("Winning with Data," p.18), Steve Burgess ("Holding Court," p.9) and Michael McCullough ("Fever Pitch," p.10), plus contributing photographer Adam Blasberg ("Ice Breaker," p.53). And that's pretty much it, in terms of men who worked on this magazine. Canada Wide itself is about 90 percent women, and many of those publishing professionals help support this magazine and its brand. That includes group VP of publishing and operations Nina Wagner, editorial director Anicka Quin, creative director Jenny Reed (who masterfully designed the Women of the Year feature itself, p.23), VP of sales Anna Lee (and her kickass team— Brianne Harper, Mira Hershcovitch, Amy LaJambe and Sheri Stubel), group VP of education and administration Jane Griffiths, director of operations Devin Steinberg, director of circulation Tracy McRitchie, production manager Kim McLane and proofreader and copy editor Melissa Edwards. Longtime BCBusiness contributing photographer Tanya Goehring captured many of the Women of the Year winners (including our cover subject, more to come on that), while Kyrani Kanavaros snapped BC Hotel Association CEO Ingrid Jarrett for the feature and Vancouver media tor Ashley Syer for "Holding Court." Then there's managing editor Alyssa Hirose and assistant editor Rushmila Rahman, both of whom make invaluable contributions to this magazine on a monthly basis. As with every issue, they wrote the lion's share of the pages you'll read here. Hirose, Rahman and expert freelancers Jessica Natale Woollard and Riley Webster all contri buted to this year's Women of the Year feature and while I don't love speaking for them, I think they'd agree that we are lucky to be showcasing such an enormous amount of talent and dedica tion with this year's winners and runnersup. Elsewhere in the issue, we have veteran columnists Frances Bula and Jennifer Van Evra waxing poetic on condo incentives ("Perking Up Some Interest," p.16) and how drought is impacting B.C.'s agriculture industry ("Dry Run," p.11). I also had the privilege of sitting down with Selena Woo ("The Conversation," p.14), runnerup in last year's Women of the Year awards, to talk about the shifting business landscape in the province and how B.C. execs can support the next generation. On that note, our cover subject and founder of Ethó . s Lab, Anthonia Ogundele, is a great re minder that there is so much value to be found in overlooked and underserved communities. In all, it's such a brilliant team and publication to be a part of. Even when you feel like an imposter.
