Also, with a nod towards Landmark 6, the southwest corner of Landmark 7 was developed as a taller feature cor- ner, and a unique glazing pattern was created with exposed snap caps two- inches deep compared to the standard three-quarters of an inch deep. A seven-level, above-ground parkade in addition to the plaza makes Landmark 7 visually distinctive. "On the south the parkade is concealed by the tower glazing and on the north by the patterning of fibre cement and Alucobond panels," Tonne says. Dagenais notes, "Creating the parkade proved to be a challenge for everything from elevator configura- tions to wayfinding and was almost a project unto itself. Fortunately we relied on Meiklejohn's skill and atten- tion to detail for a successful outcome." Also distinctive is a grand south- west entrance with a three-storey lobby clad in marble tile and featuring a white contemporary interior and distinc- tive linear ceiling. As for the massive multi-purpose, double-height event space with a 5,000-square-foot outdoor space, it was developed on top of the parkade (level seven) thus commanding views of the Okanagan Valley and Lake. The Stober Group broke ground on the site in the spring of 2019, following through on a decision made early on to build a raft slab foundation instead of steel piling. "We had based the size and height of Landmark 7 on the geo- technical loading of the slab, similar to our approach in constructing the earlier Landmark towers," Dagenais says, adding that his firm was able to prevent work stoppages during the COVID lock- downs by following strict safety protocols. With Landmark 7 completed and the events centre scheduled for a November opening, Dagenais says, "We're extremely happy with how the project turned out, but it's hardly the completion of our dis- trict overall. We have big plans ahead that we'll share in due course."
