Halse-Martin Construction Co. Ltd's challenges were mitigated some- what by the fact that movement within the hospital was kept to a minimum. Although space was at a premium, careful organization resulted in the builders being able to perform stag- ing at street level beside the area of the facility to be renovated. "The prefab walls were among a series of innova- tions that contributed to the success of the expansion," says Halse-Martin principal Rory Waterson. Martin adds, "When work involved the actual emergency department, we had laid everything out so that the existing emergency ward could still function, which was enormously ben- eficial to all parties." With both phases of the project now complete, Thorn says of the revamped Eagle Ridge Hospital, "The expan- sion is stunning, it gives the facility a new identity and very pleasing aes- thetics. Kasian did a tremendous job, and Halse-Martin's commitment even extended to creating a beautiful bench that it fabricated from a tree that had to be removed on site. It was a wonderful gesture and typical of the thought and care everybody put into this project."
