D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 2 | 55 Evolve – UBC P H OTO G R A P H Y + R EN D ER I N G CO U RT E S Y U B C P RO P ERT I E S T RUS T Heading up through the six-sto- rey building there are a total of 110 rental units, ranging from studios to four-bedroom units. "Our goal was to achieve great livable units," says Davis. "I think it's a testament to that now as the building is fully rented up and occupied." Ground orien- tated dwelling units with outdoor living spaces throughout the scheme enhance their livability, connec- tion to the community, and provide the neighbourhood with increased security through passive surveil- lance and an active street frontage In line with its overall vision, the building features a unique Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system that Courtenay says was designed with heating/cooling tempering to ensure ultimate occupant comfort, while still achieving the energy effi- ciency requirements of Passive House. "The mechanical heating/cooling/ HRV system in a Passive House project requires occupant engagement and understanding in order to provide the effect desired." This educational component was extremely important from day one. Iain MacFadyen, principal at ZGF explains that the project is much like a living lab- oratory approach and the addition of sensors located throughout the building allows energy data to be collected. The team agree that the success of Evolve is the result of a collabora- tive, open, transparent process, and partnership with shared goals. "I think it's a really, really important story about what we can achieve when we all share aspirations and under- stand what it means to get there," Marie Bednash, principal and mar- keting director at ZGF explains. Suleman concludes by saying: "With the recent addition of Evolve to our portfolio of rental housing at UBC Point Grey we now provide a total of 944 homes solely for UBC's fac- ulty and staff to rent. We also provide a total of 830 market rental homes for anyone to rent at UBC Point Grey. UBCPT has a further 444 faculty and staff rental homes and 220 market rental homes under construction or in design at UBC Point Grey. An area once referred to as a commuter cam- pus is now being recognised as an area that is thriving and essentially a beacon for living and working in a sustainably focused community." A
