The new $334-million facility includes 20,000 cubic metres of concrete work. PCL Construction selected Hanson Ready Mix to sup- ply concrete mixtures with higher recycled content and EcoCemPLC for the cement to lower the carbon footprint of the project and support the facility in meeting the standards of a net-zero carbon building. Another example, the West Memorial Building in Ottawa, is a unique project that includes modern- izing and conserving the West Memorial Building and the Supreme Court of Canada Building. With EllisDon Corporation as the construction manage- ment company, Hanson Ready Mix was contracted to supply sustainable concrete solutions with a high recycled content and EcoCemPLC for the lightweight floor toppings. Beginning in January, Hanson Ready Mix will be supplying the project to build the Advanced Nuclear Materials Research Centre for Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, a joint venture consisting of Bird Construction Inc., Chandos Construction Inc., and M. Sullivan & Son Limited. Hanson Ready Mix will be supplying EvoBuild concrete mixtures incorpo- rating EcoCemPLC and other sustainable levers for the optimized lower carbon concrete mixtures. One of Lafarge Canada's latest in the long list of contributions towards sustainable community development was a partnership with BGC Ottawa (formerly the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa) to build the new Taggart Parkes Family Clubhouse in Ottawa's south end. For the construction of this 15,000-square-foot facility, Lafarge donated around 500 cubic metres of ECOPact low-carbon concrete at a total value of $90,000. This was BGC's first low-carbon concrete facility using ECOPact, which overall saved more than 55,000 kgCO2 compared to the use of standard concrete. According to David Redfern, president and CEO of Lafarge Canada (East), "Acting on our pur- pose of Building Progress for People and the Planet, we understand it is our responsibility to not only develop sustainable and innovative solutions, such as ECOPact, to reduce our carbon footprint, but also to support the development of our communities and future generations." As many as 5,000 young people living in Ottawa's south end stand to benefit from the opportunities and programming now available at the new Taggart Parkes Family Clubhouse. BGC proudly named one of the rooms "Lafarge Canada Inspiration and Creativity Center." Finally, in the additives realm, Brian Salazar, national business development manager at Euclid Admixtures, is particularly excited by a new micro fibre reinforcement for concrete that is not only incredibly resilient, but also helps reduce plas- tic waste. PSI Fiberstrand Repreve 225 microfibre is a fine denier polyester fibre that is manufactured from plastic bottles and a part of the PSI Fiberstrand line of microfibre products.
