Handsworth was constructed in no less than 11 zones, "and this made the work very manageable and allowed us to start the steel studs rough-in and finishes a lot faster," Duke explains. "We started at the southwest cor- ner with the classroom block, which encompassed six zones, each three- storeys high, and an elevator core, then we moved onto five phases on the East wing." While the gym was the biggest construction undertaking of all the phases, Duke points out it was the eas- iest to complete due to it being a huge open-air space. "However, the sprung floor took two months to finish," he says. As for the seismic separation, "The joint runs along the walls inside the school's central Grand Commons, and on the roof, it takes the form of a slide bearing pad." Duke credits a close working relationship with KMBR as well as Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers for enabling his company to maximize efficiency on site. "For example, the school required a sub- stantial amount of structural steel, and 30 drawings were ultimately pro- duced – and this allowed us to install all of it in a quick six months, from July to December of 2020," he says. When students and staff moved into École Secondaire Handsworth Secondary School in February of this year, the building and its components were so arresting that then-North Vancouver School District superinten- dent Mark Pearmain told local press that a pleasant surprise awaited stu- dents: "I think they'll forget the old building pretty quickly."
