"Escalating material costs rendering some projects not worth doing are one thing, but soaring prices and lack of availability even apply to paint, which is vital for aluminum products," he says. Sobotec has been aggressive in increasing inventory and scheduling orders well in advance, and while Sobot agrees that the issues affecting building trades won't go away anytime soon, there is cause for hope. "In some areas, including aluminum, prices are stabilizing and going down," he says. "It may not be fast enough from our perspective, but at least the trajectory is in the right direction." Exterior Technologies Group represents a host of metal products, including Kalzip, a standing seam aluminum roofing and wall cladding system, and Alpolic Metal Composite Materials. An example of the former's visual impact is IG Field in Winnipeg, home to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, which used 200 squares of Perforated Kalzip cladding (as well as 1,588 squares of corrugated cladding). As for the latter material, the three new L-shaped buildings at Canoe Landing Campus in Toronto are clad in Alpolic aluminum composite panels; the 6-millimetre wall system was affixed to the structure by an extruded alumi- num sub-grit system featuring light-gage steel Z grits with fibreglass thermally broken brackets.
